September 10, 2022 – Citrus Officials Shouldn’t Miss an Opportunity

Bishop Gregory L. Parkes put forth a challenge to the Diocese of St. Petersburg to create eight to 10 locations of affordable housing as part of the Courageously Living the Gospel initiative. Since that challenge was made, Catholic Charities’ Shelters of Hope program has built several affordable, income-based rental apartments and other housing units for individuals and families throughout Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco and Hernando counties, and now Citrus County, the northernmost county in the diocese with St. Benedict Apartments in Crystal River.
Catholic Charities currently provides housing to more than 2,000 individuals in need through nine different housing programs. Those individuals include men, women, families, veterans, families of veterans, female households suffering from domestic violence, low income families, elderly adults on fixed incomes, migrant farm worker families, and immigrant and refugee families. Accommodations consists of permanent, supportive, transitional, temporary, and emergency shelter.

September 5, 2022 – CELEBRITY COOKING PRIEST TO APPEAR IN TAMPA
Fundraising Event on November 5, 2022, Will Benefit Catholic Charities

Delicious food is on the menu and it will be prepared in front of all guests who attend the second annual Catholic Charities Celebration of Life Gala on November 5th at Higgins Hall of St. Lawrence Catholic Church located at 5225 North Himes Avenue, Tampa.
Father Leo Patalinghug, who has appeared on the Food Network and hosts his own show on EWTN, will provide cooking demonstrations and be the keynote speaker of the Gala that will benefit clients served by Catholic Charities of the Diocese of St. Petersburg’s Ministries of Mercy. These ministries include shelters for the homeless, free medical clinics and crisis pregnancy centers.

August 28, 2022 – Local Coverage – St. Benedict Apartments Projected Move-in Date January 2023
If all goes according to plans, the new year will bring new homes to 18 families with the projected opening of the 18-unit St. Benedict Apartments located behind Daystar Life Center in Crystal River.
Construction is expected to be completed by December and the “move in” date to be sometime in January 2023.

July 20, 2022 – Local Coverage – Medical Students Serve the Homeless
Residents at a tent shelter {Tampa Hope} get health care they often struggle to access elsewhere. Students learn to adapt treatment when the ideal solution isn’t feasible.
Inside an activities building in a tent community known as Tampa Hope, a computer center is doubling as a doctors’ office waiting room. Residents are filling out paperwork and talking with volunteers in green University of South Florida t-shirts.

July 20, 2022 – Local Coverage – Tampa Hope Offers Shelter
Residents living in tents at Tampa Hope don’t just get shelter. They get services like health care, job training and education to set them up for success outside the community.
George Baranello, 52, has had some rough years recently. He lived in and out of motels as he struggled to get by doing lawn care in South Tampa. He battled drug addiction and spent time in jail and rehab.
Then in December he got an opportunity to move into Tampa Hope, a community Catholic Charities was opening in East Tampa with help from the city.

June 21, 2022 – Local Coverage – Las Villas Apartments – Catholic Charities’ Latest Affordable Housing
RUSKIN, FL — A rundown motel in Ruskin has been renovated into an affordable housing complex on U.S. Highway 41.
Hillsborough County and Catholic Charities officials will introduce the community to the affordable apartments, Las Villas, on Wednesday, a news release said.
“With rent and home prices rapidly rising across Florida and the country, governments, nonprofits, and housing advocates are finding creative solutions,” county officials said. “The $2 million project to create Las Villas Apartments in Ruskin is the latest non-traditional effort to provide affordable housing.”
